STUDENTS FROM OAKLAND SCHOOLS TECHNICAL CAMPUS NORTHWEST AND SAGINAW CAREER COMPLEX WIN THE

Winning Teams Will Represent Michigan at National ProStart® Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island, April 27-29, 2018
LANSING, MICH. – The Michigan Restaurant Association Educational Support Foundation (MRAESF) will send the Culinary team from Oakland Schools Technical Campus Northwest and the Management team from Saginaw Career Complex to compete against teams from across the country at the 17th Annual National ProStart® Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island April 27-29, 2018. Both teams were awarded first place in their respective disciplines at the Michigan ProStart® Competition held on Mar. 18 and 19 at the Lansing Center.
Sixty-two teams representing 23 career and technical centers from across Michigan—a total of nearly 250 students—competed at the Michigan ProStart Competition, an annual culinary and management competition hosted by the MRAESF. Student teams competed in Culinary, Management, Menu Design, Nutrition, Table Top Design and the ServeSafe® Knowledge Bowl and were judged by top industry professionals as well as leading college and university instructors who observed and rated all portions of the competition.
“We congratulate all of the teams on their achievements. The talent and knowledge demonstrated during the two days of competition was remarkable. These students truly are the best of the best and have bright futures ahead of them in the foodservice and restaurant industry,” said Justin Winslow, President & CEO of the Michigan Restaurant Association. “We wish the teams from Oakland Schools Technical Campus Northwest and Saginaw Career Complex a stellar performance at the National ProStart Invitational and know they will be wonderful representatives of Michigan on a national stage.”
The winning Culinary team from Oakland Schools Technical Campus Northwest prepared a three-course meal comprised of:
The Management team from Saginaw Career Complex presented their winning restaurant concept, Dash of Soul, to the judges which featured African flavors mixed with American soul. The team incorporated a charity component in the form of a Pay It Forward card that patrons can distribute to people in need from the community to redeem for a meal at the restaurant.
Branch Area Careers Center won the Menu Design competition. Plymouth Canton Educational Park was awarded first place in Nutrition. The Table Top design winner was Careerline Tech Center Team B and Careerline Tech Center Team A won the ServeSafe Knowledge Bowl.
The top teams shared in more than $1.8M in scholarships to help the students pursue careers in the foodservice industry.

Annually, more than 5,000 Michigan students at 68 high schools and career centers participate in the ProStart curriculum, a two-year high school program that unites the classroom and the industry to nurture the talent and passion of restaurant and foodservice industry’s future leaders. Each spring, ProStart students from across Michigan compete in the Michigan ProStart Competition, an annual culinary and management competition hosted by the MRAESF.

- Second course – Pork Tenderloin with a fried garlic and celery leaf crust
- Third course – Strawberry Mousse with raspberry paté de fruit
