STUDENTS FROM OAKLAND SCHOOLS TECHNICAL CAMPUS NORTHWEST AND KALAMAZOO RESA WIN THE MICHIGAN PROSTART® COMPETITION

Winning Teams Will Represent Michigan at National ProStart® Invitational in Washington, D.C., May 8 – 10, 2019
LANSING, MICH. – The Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association Educational Foundation (MRLAEF) will send the Culinary team from Oakland Schools Technical Campus Northwest from Clarkston, Michigan, and the Management team from Kalamazoo RESA from Kalamazoo, Michigan, to compete against teams from across the country at the 18th Annual National ProStart® Invitational in Washington, D.C., May 8 – 10, 2019. Both teams were awarded first place in their respective disciplines at the Michigan ProStart® Competition held on Mar. 17 and 18 at the Lansing Center.
Fifty-seven teams representing 21 career and technical centers from across Michigan—a total of more than 200 students—competed at the Michigan ProStart Competition, an annual culinary and management competition hosted by the MRLAEF. Student teams competed in Menu Design, Nutrition, ServeSafe® Knowledge Bowl, Table Top Design, Culinary and Management and were judged by top industry professionals as well as leading college and university instructors who observed and rated all portions of the competition.
“It’s always so great to see the hundreds of students who arrive to compete, bringing an abundance of energy and excitement, and standing ready to showcase their passion for the foodservice and restaurant industry,” said Justin Winslow, President & CEO of the Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association. “These talented students are the future of our industry and we’re proud this technical program helps to provide them with a direct pipeline to very meaningful and rewarding careers.”
The winning Culinary team from Oakland Technical Campus Northwest prepared a three-course meal comprised of:
Branch Area Career Center B won the Menu Design competition. Bay Arenac ISD Career Center B was awarded first place in Nutrition. The Table Top design winner was Careerline Tech Center A and Careerline Tech Center A won the ServeSafe Knowledge Bowl.
The top teams shared in more than $280,000 in scholarships to help the students pursue careers in the foodservice industry.

Annually, more than 5,000 Michigan students at 69 high schools and career centers participate in the ProStart curriculum, a two-year high school program that unites the classroom and the industry to nurture the talent and passion of restaurant and foodservice industry’s future leaders. Each spring, ProStart students from across Michigan compete in the Michigan ProStart Competition, an annual culinary and management competition hosted by the MRLAESF.

- First course – Seared Gnudi – accompanied by pea puree, pickled carrots, a bacon balsamic reduction, fresh peas, crispy parmesan and a baked pasta spiral
- Second course – Chicken Breast Medallions – stuffed with tarragon gremolata, upon chasseur sauce, beside fondant parsley root, onion soubise and brie arancini
- Third course – Corn and Blackberry Entremet – topped with a blackberry macaron, alongside a blackberry mascarpone ribbon, popped sorghum and honey lavender gelee
Branch Area Career Center B won the Menu Design competition. Bay Arenac ISD Career Center B was awarded first place in Nutrition. The Table Top design winner was Careerline Tech Center A and Careerline Tech Center A won the ServeSafe Knowledge Bowl.
