DETROIT – November 23, 2020 – The Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association (MRLA), Detroit Restaurant & Lodging Association (DRLA) and the Detroit Shipping Company will host its third annual FREE community meal – Full Plates, Full Hearts – on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26, to support individuals and families in need. The two-part culinary event, which includes a walk-up opportunity and special delivery to select area nonprofits, will provide a total of 300 delicious meals to some of Detroit’s most at-risk populations.
“The hospitality industry has a wonderful history of giving back to local communities,” said Justin Winslow, MRLA President and CEO. “We are proud to host our annual ‘Full Plates, Full Hearts’ event, not only in this season of giving, but at a time when so many are going without during such a challenging year. This is one way we can share the spirit of hospitality with those who have the greatest need.”
The first part of Full Plates, Full Hearts is a walk-up event that begins at noon at the entrance of Detroit Shipping Company located at 474 Peterboro St. in Detroit. Thanksgiving meals, boxed in individual portions, will be distributed one per person on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Masks are required and social distancing will be observed.
The second part of the event is a special delivery of individually-boxed meals to three local nonprofit organizations, including Alternatives for Girls, COTS and Neighborhood Service Organization. The boxed meals will be prepared by participating restaurants Bangkok 96 Street Food and COOP Caribbean Fusion and will include roasted turkey with gravy, cornbread stuffing, crispy brussels, Mac n Cheese and cranberry sauce.
“While we cannot open our doors this year, the needs of the community remain high,” said Jon Hartzell, owner of Detroit Shipping Company. “Chef Max Hardy and Chef Genevieve Vang, and their teams are preparing this meal with love.”
