"One Fair Wage" 2018 Ballot Proposal

A coalition identified as “One Fair Wage” attempted to have a threatening ballot proposal for the 2018 November General Election. However, the MRLA worked tirelessly with the Michigan Legislature to prevent this onerous proposal from going to the ballot. Now we need you to join the fight and tell your elected official to make necessary changes to the proposal to protect the restaurant and hospitality industry! Here is what you need to know.  

What is it?  
If unaltered, the One Fair Wage proposal will:

• Increase Michigan’s minimum wage to $12 per hour.
• Eliminate Michigan’s tipped minimum wage “tip-credit.”
• Annually increase Michigan’s minimum wage beginning in 2022 at the rate of inflation.  

Why should I care?

• If necessary changes aren’t made, this proposal will increase your costs by 241% per tipped employee per hour!
• This proposal will prevent a restaurant owner from being able to count tips as part of an employee’s wage. 
• This proposal would make Michigan only the 8th state in the country to not have a tipped minimum wage.  
• This proposal will force you to make tough business decisions regarding limiting staffing hours, increasing food costs, or reducing the amount you can invest in your employees. 

How can I help?

• While the MRA remains the only business group advocating for the restaurant and foodservice industry, we need your help! You can take action by:
• Contact your legislator directly and tell them to restore the 2014 bipartisan legislative agreement.
• Donating to the MRA Legislative Action Committee (LAC).
• Donating to the MRA Political Action Committee (PAC).
