DETROIT, MICH. – The Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association (MRLA), Detroit Restaurant & Lodging Association (DRLA) and Detroit Shipping Company will again host a FREE community meal this Thanksgiving season. Full Plates, Full Hearts — an annual event where local chefs create a delicious Thanksgiving meal for individuals and families in need — will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21 at Detroit Shipping Company located at 474 Peterboro St., Detroit. Thanksgiving meals are available one per person on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.
“As one of the largest industries in our state, our members recognize the important role they play in the communities they serve,” said Justin Winslow, MRLA President and CEO. “They are proud to share the resources and talents from within our industry and demonstrate the true spirit of hospitality, especially for our neighbors in need. We are truly thankful for the Detroit operators, chefs and employee volunteers who continue to step up year after year to make our Full Plates, Full Hearts event such a tremendous success.”
Full Plates, Full Hearts will serve up to 700 meals to some of Detroit’s most at-risk populations through the dine-in opportunity at Detroit Shipping Company and through special deliveries to select nonprofits. The meals will consist of ham, turkey breast, mac & cheese, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, broccoli, and pumpkin pie and will be prepared by chefs from participating restaurants. The restaurants include Bangkok 96 Street Food, COOP Caribbean Fusion, Halal Street, Momo Cha, Motor Burger and Minus 320 Coffee and Creamery.
“For Detroit restaurants, this is our way of saying thank you and giving back to the city and its residents for sticking by us these past few years,” said Xaviar Jaramillo, Owner of Xav’s Catering and DRLA Board Chair. “This city means so much to so many, and this event gives us a great opportunity to give back to our community and to express that gratitude in the ways that we know how.”
The special deliveries of individually boxed meals will be supported by Casa de Fleur and go to four local nonprofit organizations, including Alternatives for Girls, Cass Community Social Services, COTS and Neighborhood Service Organization.
Additionally, David Vintage Detroit will be donating cold-weather items, such as beanies, gloves and scarves, for those in need at the event. Additional organizations that have helped support this event include Aloft Detroit at The David Whitney, Element Detroit at the Metropolitan, Founders Detroit Taproom, Gordon Food Services, Grand Trunk Pub, Sysco, Traffic Jam & Snug and Xav’s Catering.
“It’s really meant to be a community event for the hospitality industry in Detroit. We did it through the pandemic, we love it, and we continue to do it,” said Jonathan Hartzell, one of Detroit Shipping Company’s owners. “If we can get 600 meals out there, that’s amazing. It’s changed so much over the years because of COVID, but really it’s just people getting together and spending time making meals for people who need it.
