LANSING, Mich. - With holiday gatherings and the college bowl season providing opportunities for adults to enjoy alcoholic beverages, the Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association (MRLA) is taking a proactive stance in promoting alcohol safety by encouraging restaurant operators and staff to sign up for its ServSafe Alcohol training and ServItUp alcohol safety resources.
Built for restaurant operators, ServSafe’s programs address both on- and off-premises operations and offer an additional training program specific to third-party alcohol delivery operations.
“Research shows that the average American sees a 100% increase in their alcohol consumption between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. With people eager to celebrate at bars and restaurants, and even in their own homes, it’s critical that restaurants remain committed to practicing responsible alcohol service,” commented Vice President of ServSafe Alcohol and Regulatory Services Trevor Estelle.
As the National Restaurant Association’s shows, diners are increasingly experimenting with new beverages, bold flavors and indulgent ingredients, including spritzes, espresso martinis and spicy beverages—and restaurants leaning into these taste preferences can do so responsibly with the quality training and tools.
“Restaurant operators want to provide a fun, safe environment for their guests, and ServSafe offers the tools and training to ensure safety is the top priority,” said MRLA President & CEO Justin Winslow. “The ServSafe Alcohol training and ServItUp resource center play a crucial role in preparing restaurant teams to serve customers responsibly while promoting the highest standards of hospitality in Michigan this winter season.”
The MRLA provides a range of resources, including the ServSafe Alcohol® certification program and online portal, to assist restaurant owners in ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday season. The training program, developed in collaboration with restaurant operators, legal experts, educators, and instructors, provides foodservice professionals with vital knowledge and skills to minimize the risks and liability associated with alcohol service.
Participants learn about alcohol regulation and laws, how to evaluate intoxication levels, check identification, and navigate difficult situations involving alcohol. After completing training, students can take an exam to earn their alcohol service certificate.
ServSafe also offers a specific delivery program, ServSafe Alcohol: Delivery, tailored to help restaurant operators, delivery personnel and staff navigate the evolving alcohol delivery and to-go landscape. As National Restaurant Association shows, nearly one-in-four (24%) of adults who order takeout or delivery included an alcohol beverage in their order.
The to-go program from ServSafe offers education specific to third-party alcohol delivery compliance and trains participants how to manage off-premises alcohol deliveries in a responsible and legal manner.
