Get Your Employees the Help They Need
|
One in five adults in America experience mental illness. Sadly, an estimated 60 percent of those diagnosed with mental health conditions did not receive treatment in the previous year. Many companies, healthcare organizations, and leaders around the world are taking mental health more seriously than ever, yet stigma remains deeply rooted in the workplace. There is substantial value in getting people the right support they need, to be well and productive at work and in life, but the challenges in the workplace are real.
Results from a recent Teladoc Health study on mental health reveal that only 36 percent of respondents believe benefits for mental health are considered as important as physical health. Only 58 percent of respondents feel they know how to improve their mental health. And 1 out of 3 feel they would be more productive at work if there was better mental health support. Now is the time to normalize the conversation.
Raise Awareness. The first step to eradicating stigma is normalizing the mental health conversation. Discuss it in your organizations; ask your senior leaders to have a voice on the topic in your town halls, on your intranets, blogs, social platforms, and company emails.
Educate Managers. When employees are ready to talk, managers need to be prepared to listen and respond. Offering training can prepare employees for how to appropriately respond to questions and provide the guidance for setting the stage for a safe conversation.
Promote Benefits. As employers, you are in the unique position to be able to make a difference in the lives of so many people through employee benefits. Communicating often with employees about available services like virtual care, or employee assistance program benefits, can put access to care within reach at the moment they need it.
With World Mental Health Day being in October, it’s worth highlighting an exclusive MRLA virtual care benefit from Teladoc Health called HealthiestYou Complete. In partnership with UnitedHealthGroup and the National Restaurant Association, Teladoc designed the HealthiestYou Complete bundle to meet the specific healthcare needs of the hospitality industry. All of the services in the bundle, including Mental Health, are free and unlimited to use.
